Reviews

  • Very well done.

While at the briefest of times the recording levels are questionable, the performances are nearly flawless. As usual, Karajan presents a very musical and passionate interpretation that should leave listeners wholly satisfied.

Absolutely wonderful! This is definitely the best interpretation of the Brahms symphonies that I've heard. It's also the best $12 I've ever spent on a collection. That German brass is incredible! This is definitely a must!
  • Bargin Price for the Benchmark

There are many great recordings of these symphonies, but von Karajan set the standard and at this price they are a steal. They are an ideal introduction for the neophyte or a treasure for the old school armchair critic. Highly recommended for everyone.
  • Brilliant and Beautiful

Karajan with the BPO is possibly one of the greatest conductor/orchestra combos that has been heard in history. The Brahms symphonies are so beautiful and Berlin plays them wonderfully. These recordings are flawless and a joy to listen to. Who wouldnt want to buy them? $12.00 for 4 symphonies played by some of the worlds greatest! You could go spend $10.00 per symphony on other cds, but this is the best.
  • Thoughtful and Serious...

    From Bill Carter, CPA
Most of Brahms music is thought of as thoughtful and serious. The first is dramatic, second is spirited, third is lyric and nostalgic, and the fourth is tragic. Brahms was so repectful of Beethoven his first symphony first movement sat in a drawer for 12 years. It took 21 years to complete. The second symphony took only four months. The second symphony is very sophisticated based on a three note motive D, C-Sharp, D. You will enjoy all the symphonies on this recording. Even Brahms would be please with the interpretation.
  • Great music for a great value

Let me just say this: this is an amazing value. Brahms is an outstanding composer, and Karajan is a legendary conductor. Karajan's adaptation of the four symphonies is top class. I would recommend this as a basic introduction for anyone's music collection.
  • what an incredibly passionate rendition!

i'm only through the 4th, but wonderfully moving, excellent performance, the horn section was incredibly solid, and expressive. Some excessive vibrato with the flutes, though.

Simply brilliant. This is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. The emotions in Brahms' symphonies are amazingly expressed. Brahms may have only written four symphonies, but they are clearly among the best in the world.
